I am still shorter and fatter than I’d like to be. The Tea Party still exists. Kentucky is still knocked out of the NCAA tourney. But my computer seems to work slightly better. Nothing earth shattering, but a net plus. Particularly welcome improvements relating to Exchange functionality. Changelog here. Onward and upward.

An app for note-taking and a stylus with a fine point would be a fabulous way to take notes and keep track of random stuff I write down. I already carry a portfolio with a pad of paper. Bye bye to that if someone does it right.

First Look: SketchNotes for iPad

When I first heard the idea for SketchNotes, I wasn’t really that intrigued — until I watched this video. Combining a text editor and a drawing tool, SketchNotes brings a nicely conceived idea to the table. On a platform that supports both text entry (via a physical or onscreen keyboard) and touch-based drawing, unifying these two concepts comes more naturally than I would have thought.

Developed by Amanda Rosler of ZombieCatSoftware, SketchNotes looks like it will offer a simple but pleasant utility that will come in handy both when taking notes on the go and while sitting down at a desk or (more likely) table at Starbucks. It’s yet another application that I look forward to trying out on a real device.

Why Chrome isn’t my default browser

I actually don’t particularly care about any of Macworld‘s reasons. My reasons for not switching to Chrome:

1) Top tabs: I am going to keep saying/screaming/writing this until I am blue in the face. I want the the tab bar below the bookmarks bar, like all good hearted people do. At least provide the option.

2) Absence of Yoono: They should be paying me because I tell everybody about how great Yoono is all the time. A sidebar where I can keep with Tweets and Facebook updates at a glance is essential. Sidebar usage is also a lot more efficient in terms of screen real-estate.

So say we all? Please?

So the interface uses….Flash?!?! Oy. That seems frightening. Otherwise, it seems like there is nothing earth-shattering here, which is a shame.

Look, I love the idea of Tivo, but I’ve never owned one. I’d be willing to pay a little extra every month for the Tivo experience, but that’s not available to me. For 95% of people, the cable company DVR is fine. Sad to say, but I believe Tivo and Palm, which both originated incredibly important categories, will not exist in 5 years.

FIOS vs. Comcast

After a lot of years of fairly good service with Comcast, they finally ticked me off enough to switch to Verizon’s FIOS. A few small hiccups aside, I’m very happy with the decision.

The pros: faster internet, easy integration with my existing Airport network, excellent picture quality, more HD channels, decent customer service, may actually be cheaper than Comcast if you do the full bundle (phone, internet and TV).

The cons: guide and menus take a little getting used to, periodic DVR glitches (probably not worse than Comcast though), non-trivial installation process.

If you’re annoyed by Comcast, and you can get FIOS in your area, its worth real consideration.
